Recently, I had the opportunity to travel down to beautiful and sunny San Diego to check out the new 2017 Kia Sportage. The launch event was so much fun and we got to drive the Sportage through a variety of Southern California’s terrain. Prior to now, I had never stepped foot into a Sportage, but after the drive, I’m definitely a believer.
So here’s the deal, I love cars. Who doesn’t? But I’m not too into the details under the hood. As long as it gets from point A to point B, does it efficiently, and keeps me safe, I’m good. Fortunately, the Sportage checks off all of the boxes with ease and packs a few other great features.
Inside of the Sportage you’ll find a variety of tech inside. The trim will dictate these options, but if you opt for the 7-inch touchscreen you’ll get the best of everything. Android Auto is one of my favorites here and have no fear iPhone lovers, Apple CarPlay is on the way soon as well. Having a nice responsive touchscreen with Android Auto or CarPlay is key here if you’re into the tech aspect of the vehicle. You’ll also get to experience Kia’s UVO eServices.
All of the audiophiles out there will certainly appreciate the Harman Kardon 320-watt, 8-speaker, sound system as well. If you choose to go this route as I had with the Sportage, you’ll love the enhancements from Harman Kardon’s CLARI-FI technology. Basically, CLARI-FI restores compressed audio, fills in lost details, and brings the music back to a near high-fidelity state. If you’re a music lover, this sound system is the way to go.
There’s also plenty of places to plug in your tech. You’ll find a few USB ports here and there, as well as your traditional 12V ports. There’s nothing I enjoy more than having USB ports inside of a car. It’s 2016, people. Thankfully most car manufacturers are getting with the program. No one likes to carry around adapters and power bricks, so if you’re a techie like me, having these simple luxuries can make or break the buying decision.
When it comes to the drive, Kia’s 2017 Sportage rides great. I’m not big on going in-depth with every little detail here as opinions vary per person, but the Sportage is nothing but smooth. The suspension here is on another level. It handles bumps and rough roads like a champ and the AWD 2017 Sportage is a fantastic companion for your off-roading adventures.
There’s plenty of room inside as well. Don’t judge a book by its cover. The interior is comfortable for long trips and every seat has ample leg room. The rear cargo area is also 18% bigger than its predecessor, which is fantastic. There’s a lot to love about the Sportage this year, but of course these are all just my initial impressions of it, though we may follow up with a full review down the road.
Becoming A Believer
Prior to now, I hadn’t really driven a Kia aside from a Sorento I had for a little bit a few weeks back, but everything here is well executed. I’m quickly becoming a believer in what Kia has to offer. I know Kia offers vehicles that pack a ton more technology than the Sportage, but if you’re looking for a solid ride at a great price (when compared to its competitors), this is where it’s at.
With a starting price of $22,990 for the FWD model or $24,490 for the AWD model, the 2017 Kia Sportage seems to have a little bit something for everyone.
